Foreign Test Report
Presented at the beginning of 2013, here is the latest Intelligent Sport (IS) given by Lexus. I expected a lot from this test because the brand has announced an unprecedented 12-vehicle technologies. Quilted bright, my curiosity did not ask for much and it is with pleasure that I took possession of the vehicle.
Comes in a white Nova exclusively for the F Sport (option CHF 1’200. -) Version, I am immediately in love with the whole. I remember a little heavy and not very dynamic general design but this third generation F Sport version offers, among other things, a very aggressive front bumper that is reminiscent of the famous, exuberant and excessive Lexus LFA .
In addition to the front bumper which gives a much more biting look, I also notice the beautiful exclusive light alloy wheels of 18 inches with a anthracite color LED and fog. This combination of very distinctive colors still brings a touch of sportiness and elegance to the newest brand.
The designers did not stop there and in general, they printed a much larger dynamic on all parts of the vehicle. Basically, I note that the side skirts have been reviewed and taillights and trunk for one purpose: to harmonize the acronym (Intelligent Sport) with the bride’s dress. Personally, I’m in love and the dimensions of the whole does not shock me as they are well proportioned with a length of 4.66 m, a width of 1.81 m and a height of 1.43 m.
Unlike previous models, this third iteration fills my eyes its specifications a bit paradoxical. I finally feel myself to find the right compromise between sportiness and elegance.
It’s time to drag me inside and again, I am pleasantly surprised by the vision and comfort available to me. Maintaining the seat and the driving position is good, the overall impression is excellent. The design is not left with a simple dashboard and clearly inspired by the instrumentation LFA … it still.
What immediately catches the eye is the only meter that sits in the middle of the dashboard. A stop and with the engine off, only a gray circle stands a black background. No needles and even less for other counters. To see something, start the engine. The digital display allows you to instantly recognize three zones: central tachometer and speedometer digital. On the left, the gauge of temperature of water with the outside temperature and finally, right, fuel gauge with distance far.
Once this integrated element, I look around me and realize that the lower part of the dashboard is well stocked. Buttons, levers, joystick, wheel, etc.. everything is almost to lose the driver and passengers. In particular, I am intrigued by the provision of certain functions such as resetting the odometer or the sheer number of buttons (17) on the wheel.
For the rest, the reputation of Lexus is waiting for you with top quality materials and impeccable arrangement even if small elements deserve to be reviewed. For example, the rear seats fold via / ratio 60 40 but the available surface is not flat with a walk of a few inches between the trunk (480 l.) And cockpit. Another example is the on-board computer with its screen and navigation via joystick is not practical and suffers from some delays not to mention that sometimes it does not support the smartphone, which requires a judgment of the car and restart.
Reading the specifications of the engine, I had a little doubt because fundamentally, the specifications are exactly the same as the previous generation. A second careful reading reveals that the engine is the same, to his nickname (4GR-ESF) and it was released in 2003 already. While the promotion of the car is based on 12 major developments, I am surprised that so Lexus model with an engine that has already 10 years.
So for those who have missed the last 10 years of the IS range, I suggest a little wakeup call! Built around a 6-cylinder V 2,500 cm3, the engine develops 208 HP (153kW) at 6,400 t. / Min with a torque of 252 Nm at 4,800 t. / Min. Despite modest specifications, the machine has a variable control of the intake valves and exhaust as well as direct injection with a combined fuel consumption 9.2l/100 declared.
For the transmission part, either, no surprise since the 6-speed automatic transmission is always the same and traction is exerted on the rear wheels only.
Clearly, these elements have somewhat tarnished my enthusiasm and I intend to form an opinion during the next few days of testing.
Initially, my perception of various pipe elements is excellent. A thick steering wheel and fits perfectly in your hands, a special steering radius for a vehicle of this size (5.2 m), a silent cathedral itself to 120 km / h and a remarkable comfort thanks to seats that wrap perfectly my pelvis and back. On this last point, there is an option to CHF 3’900. – Which includes heating and cooling seats, electric steering wheel adjustment, memory for the driver, folding and auto-dimming mirrors seat. And I’m not even talking about suspensions and chassis are simply Topper on all types of road surface.
But then, with a model called Intelligent Sport and stamped F Sport, I must admit that I had high expectations and what interested me most was the “sport” side of the limousine to the tunes of shameless! Use twice the word sport in a surname, even prestigious brands did not dare do that.
During the first laps, I formed the frame and I watched several times this knob on the center console that allows you to select two modes: Eco and Sport (again). At ignition, the car always starts in eco mode and sincerely, even if this mode is perfectly suited for casting or driving in town, I really wanted to experience the sporty side of the white bird.
Cap on small roads that I know well and passing in sport mode. Immediately, the bottom of the tachometer changes color and the engine mapping is more alive and I can not help thinking: this is it, sports beast is awake! I spend the automatic transmission in manual mode and my right foot gets heavier. I can link turns and I spend each curve a little faster with precise steering and a chassis that does not flinch under the roll or poorly adjusted suspensions. Then, once the road clears, I got the accelerator and there, so I was expecting an avalanche of sensations, little or nothing. First 3,000 t. / Min, 4,000 t. / Min and 5,000 t. / Min and finally, painfully, I spend 6,000 t. / Min at a rate of walking. I look again if I just turned 55 because with these buttons, I may have forgotten something. But no, everything is, or rather, it lacks one essential point: the cavalry. With a ratio of 83 horsepower per liter, our sporty 208 hp is cut for hiking but in no case to survey racetracks. Add to that a box of slow and recalcitrant speed on downshifts and you get a coach who is attractive but clearly disappointing for use “sports”.
Let us understand this negative observation: the chassis, suspension and brakes are perfectly mastered. However, despite a pretty noise in the (slow) revving, the IS 250 gives the impression of the ascent of Mount Fuji while the floor is completely flat! In short, say the experience was heartbreaking and frustrating is an understatement even though this chassis to a huge potential.
Of course, if prospective buyers are not looking for the sporty side, they will be delighted to find all the latest technological advances in comfort, active and passive safety. The adaptive cruise control with pre-crash safety system controlled by radar (CHF 2’500 -.), 10 airbags, the monitoring system dead angles (CHF 1’300 -.), Navigation system (CHF 4’000. -) and the excellent Mark Levinson surround sound system 15 speakers 835 W (CHF 2’200 -.). All these elements provide real comfort and are blameless for urban and highway use.
When Lexus launched the LFA , I had been a little perplexed motivations and brand strategy. A radical model standpoint of performance and price seemed to float far beyond the rest of the range. In other words, I harbored a hope on the fact that Lexus had used the LFA as a technological showcase and, little by little, some innovations would be in the rest of the portfolio. Unfortunately, for the moment, with the exception of instrumentation, there is nothing to report.
In conclusion, the picture is successful in innumerable points but disappointing on two elements that seem essential: the motor (10 years old!) And the automatic transmission of the last century. There clearly has a casting error or name. I would add that the motor level, with an emission of 213 g / km and combined fuel consumption of 9.7 l/100km proven rate, there is enough to evaluate the competition to realize that something is wrong in this IS.
Is the price. Although the IS core starts to CHF 46’800 -., Our test model culminates still CHF 70’500 -. (50% of price). Of course, for such a sum, the car is very well equipped and do not add anything including for free for 10 years or 100,000 km service.
Finally, the IS range offers two models with 300h and F. However, if the first is a hybrid and therefore offers a different driving experience yet again despite an F Sport trim, the second is downright stratospheric with 8 cylinders and 423 CV from CHF 101’900. -. Of course, between 250 and IS F – and as long as your main selection criterion is a sporty limousine – the market is bloated in this price range.
